HOW TO CHOOSE THE WAY IN THE VOLLEY

BACKHAND VOLLEY

FEATURES OF THE BACKHAND VOLLEY IN PADEL:

The backhand volley has the particularity of always being ahead of the right volley, and this is due to a simple reason: when you turn to prepare the shot, the shoulder and the arm are already in front of our body while the right volley is behind. Thus, covering strong balls is easier, as well as doing a low volley and generate angles.
It is also easier to place the body on the ball because when we want to rotate, we have less rotation than in the right; therefore, we have less strength and we help us more with the body.

COMMON MISTAKES:

Want to roll over unreasonably: It is important to rotate, so, rolling over cancels the rotation. Besides, when we hit like this we generate a very great discomfort and can even cause elbow and wrist injuries.

Lower the tip: Because we want to accelerate the ball, we do a final movement with the wrist to give effect and strength. It may be done this way, but it is a double-edged sword because it can cause injury and is a high-risk stroke.

Lift the elbow and change the handle for the backhand: it is common that, mainly for lack of strength and technique, the elbow was raised changing the handle to generate that lever, causing thus a load on the elbow that can lead to injury.

Below, I leave common guidelines that we saw in the last post with the volley from the right.

How many times did you ask if the ball that you did the volley was well directed or not?

How many times did you argue with your partner about a way that was wrong chosen according to your criteria but not of your partner´s?

In this post, I will try you take those doubts away and, together with your partner, you both know where to throw the ball and why.

Before I start, I will make it clear that this explanation is made without a defined strategy, in other words, having the freedom to play on either side.

To begin with, we must understand that when you hit a ball, many thoughts address that situation:

  • Where do I throw it?
  • What shot do I use?
  • Where is my opponent?
  • Where is my partner?
  • What did my partner say to me?
  • The score.
  • My mood in that moment.
  • The previous strategy I must follow.

Is it clear that they are many, are not? Therefore, we must make it clear two things:

  1. Hit is very difficult, as we have already seen, so, we will try to focus on the tactical convenience of the play.
  2. My partner, who is seeing the play from outside, will have A DIFFERENT OPINION, most of the time.

For these two reasons, we must work together to make it clear and, as far as possible, and in uncomfortable or complicated situations, we must fulfill this requirement.

Let´s start dividing the backhand volley:

  • Volley close to the body from the right.
  • Volley away from the body from the right.

If we play as a team and we respect, where possible, this theory, we will cover the court in a better way and we will leave less space to our opponents. Thus, we can reduce mistakes and, above all, play better positioned.

I hope clarify doubts about this shot and that you practice it.

Comment, share and train.

Greetings and to the next post.
